Looking back: 2003 - International Year of Freshwater

The United Nations General Assembly in resolution 55/196 proclaimed the year 2003 as the International Year of Freshwater. It encouraged Governments, the United Nations system and all other actors to take advantage of the Year to increase awareness of the importance of sustainable freshwater use, management and protection. It also called upon governments, national and international organizations, non-governmental organizations and the private sector to make voluntary contributions and to lend other forms of support to the Year.

The enormous floods in Europe in summer and winter of the years passed, which took place also in other parts of the world, brought this element and the freshwater ecosystems closer to us all, not only to people directly involved. We are fascinated by water and water bodies. On the other hand, we are threatened. Without water, however, life is impossible.

In consequence, the ecology of the water systems gaines more and more attention concerning questions on

  • life communities, plants and animals in lakes, rivers, brooks or springs
  • ecological mechanisms within a water body and its relations to the adjacent land
  • biological, chemical or physical processes
  • effects of toxicants on the water and its life communities
  • protection from pollutions, their management and control
  • restoration of destroyed oder severly damaged waters etc.
We have a long experience and high competence in the subjects listed above. If you want to use our knowledge, in case you
  • like to assess the ecological impacts of your enterprise, to enhance or control them
  • want to draw a concept for a nature conservation sponsoring
  • need a study on a water body, it´s use or damage
  • need an ecological survey of a water body
  • search for a plan to re-vitalize or restore a water body
  • as a journalist, like to write an article and need special consult etc.
